Job Details

Are you an ambitious Press or Communications Officer looking for your next challenge?

Would you relish the opportunity to tell the inspiring story of how National Lottery good cause money is helping communities across the UK to deliver the changes they want to see?

We are looking for a creative and proactive press/communications officer with at least two years’ previous experience to join our busy strategic communications team.

The role can be based in Newcastle or London, but will involve regular travel to other offices.

About us

We are the largest community funder in the UK – we’re proud to award money raised by National Lottery players to communities across the UK. Last year alone we gave out over half a billion pounds (£508.5 million) of National Lottery funding to over 11,000 community projects across the UK, enabling even more people and communities to bring their ideas and ambitions to life.

At the heart of everything we do is the belief that when people are in the lead, communities thrive. National Lottery funding is open to everyone and we’re privileged to be able to work with the smallest of grassroots groups right up to large UK-wide charities.

We are looking for diverse and talented people who share our values and are passionate about funding great ideas that matter to communities and make a difference to people’s lives.

The Role

We are looking for a creative and proactive communications/press officer with at least two years’ previous experience to join our busy strategic communications team.

You will help us to tell inspiring stories about projects that are making a difference to people’s lives, showing the impact of National Lottery funding in communities across the UK.

You will have the opportunity to work on high profile, UK-wide campaigns such as The People’s Projects and The Big Lunch. At the same time you will be responsible for driving great quality regional media coverage and developing relationships with local MPs to help support our local funding teams. You will also get to support our managers on crisis communications - making this a great role for developing and honing your skills.

Working with a manager you will be encouraged to use your news sense while ensuring our communications are tailored to our different audiences and are in line with our strategy.

We need you to be a confident communicator able to build effective relationships with a range of different people, including colleagues, the projects we fund (in order to place targeted case study features), local MPs and, of course, regional, national and broadcast media.

You will be organised, efficient and able to thrive in in a fast-paced environment. You will enjoy being part of a friendly and supportive team.

You will also be expected to take part in our out of hours on call press office rota.

The Person

You will need to demonstrate your experience, qualifications and skills in these areas:

  • At least two years of experience of working in a PR agency, in house communications, or press office function
  • Excellent written skills
  • Enthusiasm for current news issues and the media
  • A positive self-starter attitude to building relationships in the media
  • Highly organised, with an ability to think on your feet and work at pace
  • A good understanding of the sector and the public policy context in which the fund operates
  • Digital skills including some experience of using social and digital channels to engage audiences
  • Be committed to the Fund’s vision and principles and encourage others to do the same
  • Be a supportive team player who shows interest in others and develops a range of contacts outside your own team to get the job done
  • Communicate in an honest and engaging manner, with the ability to influence and convince others
  • Take ownership and be accountable for your work and encourage others to do the same
  • Be responsive to emerging issues and trends which impact on your work, the work of the team, or the Fund.

For you

We seek to develop our staff and offer a wide range of personal development opportunities.

We offer a wide range of generous benefits including:
